The combination of the tropical climate, humidity in certain seasons, and salt spray borne on the sea breezes means that the structures and fittings of North Island require constant love and attention to keep them looking fresh and cared for. A ‘silent refurbishment’ is continuously underway to maintain the look and feel of this luxurious, unique haven, many of whose structures are comprised of natural materials sourced from around the Island.
As well as the demanding nature of the work itself, the second challenge facing the artisans of the North Island maintenance team is to carry out their tasks without in any way impacting on the guest experience. They do this so well that our guests remain blissfully unaware of the activities of our carpenters, masons and other skilled craftsmen.
Currently, we are replacing the Alang-Alang roofs with the help of a team of Balinese craftsmen who are experts at working with this soft Indonesian grass. It’s a material very much suited to the local climate as it is durable and can handle the humidity. It’s also a great heat insulator and can reduce the ambient temperatures inside villas by up to ten degrees. Most importantly, it is completely sustainable, which is a primary consideration in every decision made on North Island.
