Rise and Shine

With New Year’s resolutions still fresh in one’s mind and a wellness trend that’s on the rise, our sunrise Spa Hill hikes have grown increasingly popular since the start of 2017. A guided hike up this beautiful granitic outcrop at dawn is one of the best ways for early risers to start the day on North Island. The 360 views from the top are well worth skipping the lie-in. It’s not only a great opportunity to get some exercise and hear about North Island’s fauna and flora, but also a chance for you to disconnect and reconnect – an activity to reset your body, mind and soul.

Meet our Environmentalists when the stars are still a glimmer in the inky sky. Equipped with flashlights, the excitement and adrenaline negates the need for a wake-up call. For those coming from afar it also offers a unique chance to make the most of jet-lag. Luckily, it’s not unreasonably early – being close to the equator, the sun rises on North Island at approximately 06h15 and never varies by more than 15-20 minutes on either side of this.

A brisk 30-minute guided walk provides for excellent cardio exercise, but if it all feels a bit much this early in the morning, you can stop to catch your breath while listening to our guides tell you about the Island’s flora and fauna. Spending time with our Environmentalists allows the opportunity to learn about North Island’s conservation work and the efforts that have gone into rehabilitating the Island into a place where its native species can flourish once again.

At the summit, it’s time to be treated to some thirst-quenching refreshments and a light, healthy snack. All in time to watch the sun rise above the horizon. The island is quiet. Yours alone. Just the sound of the waves crashing in the distance below. A time to pause and reflect. To be present.

With azure oceans stretching as far as you can see, it lends perspective to the world. A moment to remember.
